Frequently Asked Questions

The 8 questions that actually decide a plumbing call, answered with estimated ranges.

What is considered a plumbing emergency?

Five things, and it is a shorter list than most people expect. Water you cannot stop. Sewage entering the house. Any leak near electrics — an outlet, the electrical panel, a light fixture. A water heater LEAKING rather than merely cold. And no water at all where somebody in the home needs it for a medical reason. Notice what is not on it: a dripping faucet, a running toilet, one slow drain, or a heater that has gone cold. Those are genuinely unpleasant and they are not emergencies — they will be identical at nine tomorrow morning, and after-hours work runs an estimated $200 to $400 an hour against $95 to $200 in regular hours.

What classifies as a plumbing emergency?

If you would rather have a test than a list, there are three questions and any ONE yes makes it an emergency. CAN YOU STOP IT? If shutting a valve stops the water, you have bought yourself until morning; if nothing stops it, you have not. IS IT GETTING WORSE? A problem that is stable at midnight will be stable at eight; one that is spreading will not. IS ANYTHING ELSE AT RISK — electrics, a ceiling, a floor, a person? That last one is why sewage and electrical proximity are always tier one regardless of volume. Three questions, twenty seconds, and they are the same three we ask on the phone.

What is considered an emergency plumbing situation?

Worth separating the situation from the fault, because they are not the same thing. The same dripping joint is not an emergency in a garage and is one above the electrical panel. The same clogged drain is not an emergency in a house and is one in a restaurant that cannot open with it. No hot water is not an emergency for most households and is one where somebody is being cared for at home. So a short list of faults is always urgent, and everything else depends on where it is and who is there — which is why we ask about the building as well as the pipe.

Is a plumbing issue an emergency?

Usually not. Most plumbing problems are stable: they were the same yesterday, they will be the same tomorrow, and the work costs a third to a half less in standard hours. The typical emergency job here runs an estimated $114 to $568 and averages about $193 — and some of that spend is on jobs that could have waited. What changes the default is water you cannot stop, sewage indoors, or anything electrical. Absent those three, the useful question is not how fast somebody can come but whether they need to come tonight at all.

Is a clogged drain considered an emergency?

Usually no, and it is the most common after-hours call that could have waited. One slow or clogged fixture while everything else in the house drains normally is a branch problem: identical at nine tomorrow, same work, a third to a half less. A plunger with the overflow held shut, or a hand snake past the trap, quite often ends it tonight. It becomes an emergency when it stops being one fixture — several draining slowly at once, or anything coming back up at the LOWEST point in the house. That is the main line rather than a branch, every gallon used upstream is making it worse, and that one is worth a plumber tonight.

Can you call 911 for plumbing issues?

Not for plumbing itself — but the honest answer has three parts. CALL 911 the moment it stops being plumbing: a smell of gas with people in danger, a structural collapse, water in contact with electrics where somebody could touch either, or anyone injured. CALL SOCALGAS for a gas smell — they take those calls 24 hours a day, and a plumber is the wrong trade. AND CALL YOUR WATER PROVIDER for anything on the street side of your meter: a main in the road, a gushing hydrant, water coming up through the sidewalk. That third number is the one almost nobody thinks of, and in Pico Rivera it is whichever provider is printed on your water bill.

Who is responsible for burst water pipes?

It turns on the meter, and most people cannot place that boundary. Everything on YOUR side of the meter is yours — the supply into the house and the pipework inside it. Everything on the STREET side belongs to the water provider. In a rental, California generally puts keeping the plumbing in working order on the landlord, while your own belongings are yours. On a leased commercial unit it is the lease that decides, and the line is usually drawn at the tenant's space — which is why establishing who can approve the repair comes before anybody cuts anything.

What are the signs of a good plumber?

Four, and only one of them is about plumbing. THEY TALK YOU THROUGH STOPPING THE WATER before they set out, which limits the damage and teaches you something you keep. THEY TELL YOU WHEN IT CAN WAIT, with the reason. THEY GIVE YOU A C-36 NUMBER when asked, checkable against the state board's register in under a minute. AND THEY SEPARATE THE TWO JOBS: stopping it tonight and fixing it properly are different work at different prices, and the second can need a permit — so both should be quoted in writing before either starts.
