Our Process
How an emergency call runs in Pico Rivera: the call, the shut-off, the plumber, the written quote and the fix.
From Your Call to a Fixed System
Three tiers, and we say which one you are in — including when the right number is not us.
Ring, and describe what the water is doing
Not the fixture — the water. Whether you can stop it, whether it is clean or waste, and whether it is anywhere near electrics. Those three answers place you in a tier in about twenty seconds.
We tell you the tier, including tier three
Ring now, ring at nine tomorrow, or ring your water provider, SoCalGas or 911 instead of us. If it is not a plumbing call, you hear that before anybody is sent.
Shut-off first, always
Before anybody sets out. The main shut-off for the property, or the supply valve on the fixture, and the power if water is anywhere near it. The real ETA is given on the same call.
Stop it, then quote the permanent fix in writing
An emergency repair and a permanent one are different jobs at different prices, and the second can need a permit from the city the address is in. Both are quoted in writing before either happens.
Three tiers, and the third one is not a plumber at all
After hours is an estimated $200 to $400 an hour against $95 to $200. This is how to tell when you need to pay it.
TIER ONE — ring now
Water you cannot stop. Sewage entering the house. Any leak near electrics. A water heater LEAKING rather than merely cold. And no water at all where somebody in the house needs it for a medical reason.
TIER TWO — ring at nine tomorrow
One slow or clogged fixture while the rest of the house works. A dripping faucet. A running toilet. A heater that has gone cool. Every one of those is identical in the morning, the work is the same, and it costs a third to a half less.
TIER THREE — ring somebody else entirely
A water main in the STREET is your water provider's to repair. A smell of gas is SoCalGas's, and they take those calls 24 hours a day. Anything where a person is genuinely at risk is 911. A plumber is the wrong call for all three.
The boundary that decides tier three: your meter
Everything on your side is yours. Everything on the street side is the water provider's — and in Pico Rivera that can be the City's own water authority, the Pico Water District or the San Gabriel Valley Water Company, so check the name on your bill.
The first real rain is when a line that was merely slow stops
A sewer lateral can run at reduced capacity for a long time without anybody noticing — 1950s cast iron narrowing inward, or a section that has settled in the worked ground further east. Then the first sustained rain arrives, groundwater raises the load on the line, and a drain that had merely been slow stops altogether. Often across a whole street in the same week, because the whole street was plumbed in the same years.
Which makes the cheap version of this a scheduled problem rather than an emergency, and it is the one thing on this site where planning genuinely saves money. If a drain was slow last winter and slow again this spring, it is telling you what will happen in November. Dealing with it in standard hours in September costs a fraction of dealing with it on a wet Sunday night, and it is exactly the same work.
- Told on the phone which of the three tiers this is
- Shut-off instructions given before anybody sets out
- Standard-hours booking offered wherever it is safe to wait
- Told when the water provider or SoCalGas is the right call
